Badtz-Maru is a male penguin with spiky hair, created by Hisato Inoue for Sanrio in 1993. Unlike the widely beloved Hello Kitty, he has a bit of an attitude and is marketed to all genders. Badtz-Maru celebrates his birthday on April 1st, which is also April Fool's Day.
